The Layers panel — every switch explained
Every name, number, and note drawn on top of your plan is a layer you can switch on or off from the Layers button. Here is what each switch does, with before-and-after pictures, and which ones change your printouts.
The Layers button controls everything that is drawn on top of your plan: wall measurements, room names, furniture names and sizes, outlets, switches and plan symbols, alignment guides, vaulted-ceiling outlines, floor patterns, saved tile layouts, sticky notes, tape measurements you kept, and corner angles. It's the stacked-sheets icon, the first button in the toolbar above the plan, right after Flow check (on a phone, the first icon in the toolbar row). It used to be called Labels.
Switching a layer off only hides it. Nothing is deleted, and you can switch it back on at any time. Your choices are remembered on the device you made them on, for every design you open there.
Vaulted ceilings, flooring, sticky notes, tape measurements and outlets start off on a new device. Each one switches itself on the moment you add such an item, and opening a plan that already has them shows them too, unless you hid that layer yourself.

Can't see something? Start here
Open Layers and check the row for what's missing: - Room names are gone → Show room labels. - Room names show only a letter tag → tap the tag to open it, or tick Keep labels expanded. - All wall measurements are gone → Show exterior dimensions and Show interior dimensions. - The overall outside lengths are gone, or you want them gone → Show exterior dimensions. - The room-by-room measurements are gone, or you want them gone → Show interior dimensions. - Furniture names or sizes aren't on the plan → Show furniture labels / Show furniture dimensions (both start off; a selected piece shows its name, and its width and depth are in the inspector). - Some wall numbers are missing → zoom in. A number shows only when it has room on screen, and a selected wall shows all of its numbers. - The room measurements sit inside the rooms and you want them in the margin (or the other way round) → Inside the rooms, under Show interior dimensions. - Outlets, switches, lights or circuit lines disappeared, or you can't tap them → Show outlets, switches & symbols. The same row shows their names, like breaker numbers. - You want to check that corners are square → Show corner angles. - The other floors' faint outlines are gone → Show other floors (multi-floor designs; it starts off). - Sticky notes are gone → Show sticky notes. - A measurement you kept with the tape is gone → Show tape measurements. - The vaulted-ceiling outline is gone (or you can't tap furniture under one) → Show vaulted ceilings. - The wood, tile, or carpet pattern is gone → Show flooring. The last five, plus outlets, start off on a new device and switch on by themselves when you add one, so on a new phone or computer you may need to tick them once. Still stuck? Reset to defaults at the bottom of the menu puts every switch back the way it was on day one.

Open the Layers menu
Click Layers, the first button in the toolbar above the plan, right after Flow check. A ticked box means the layer is showing. Click a row to switch it; the plan updates straight away and the menu stays open, so you can try a few. Click anywhere outside to close it. Indented rows belong to the row above them and are greyed out until that row is on.
Layers on a computer, as a new device starts: measurements and room labels on, the rest off. - 3
On a phone or tablet
The same Layers button is the first icon in the toolbar row under the floor picker, just before the magnet. The list is the same as on a computer. Room labels start on as small name tags; tap a tag to see that room's inside size and area.
Layers on a phone: the first icon in the toolbar row, the same switches as on a computer. - 4
Show exterior dimensions
The outermost measurement lines around your plan: the overall length of each outside wall, from one outer wall face to the other (30′ 6.5″ along the top here). They tell you the size of the whole house or flat. It starts on. Turn it off and only the room-by-room measurements stay, if Show interior dimensions is on. The two switches don't depend on each other. Prints? The export dialog's Exterior dimensions box starts ticked or unticked to match this switch, and you can change it there; see What prints below.
Off: only the room-by-room numbers. On: the overall 30′ 6.5″ and 26′ 6.5″ outside lengths as well. - 5
Show interior dimensions
The measurements along each wall, split where other walls meet it. Each piece runs from wall face to wall face (7′ 7.5″ for the bathroom and 10′ 6.5″ for the bedroom here), so every number is usable space inside a room. It starts on. Turn it off for a cleaner plan that shows only the overall outside lengths, if Show exterior dimensions is on. With both off the plan shows no wall measurements at all; turning either one on brings back the wall length you see while dragging a wall and the distances shown while you place a door or window. On a busy or zoomed-out plan, a number that doesn't fit its piece of wall is left out, together with its line, so numbers never pile on top of each other or sit on furniture. Zoom in and it appears. The wall you've selected, a wall you're dragging, and the wall of a selected door or window always show all of their numbers. Exports aren't affected. Prints? The export dialog's Interior dimensions box starts unticked only when this switch and Show exterior dimensions are both off; see What prints below.
Off: only the overall lengths. On: each room's inside width and depth along the walls. - 6
Inside the rooms
The indented row under Show interior dimensions. With it on, the room-by-room measurements along an outside wall are drawn on the room side of that wall, inside the space they measure, instead of out in the margin. It's handy while you plan an empty space. It starts on, and it's greyed out while Show interior dimensions is off. It works on furnished plans too: each number slides along its wall to a clear stretch, past a bed, a sofa or a run of cabinets, and the line is drawn over the furniture. A wall keeps its measurements in the margin only when one of its numbers has no clear spot at all, such as a wall lined end to end with kitchen cabinets (rugs don't count). A number that a room label leaves no room for moves out by itself too. Untick Inside the rooms to put every room measurement back in the margin, the way plans used to look. Prints? The export dialog's Inside the rooms box, indented under Interior dimensions (greyed out unless that box is ticked), starts the way this switch is set; see What prints below.
Inside the rooms: on by default, under Show interior dimensions. - 7
Exterior only, interior only, both, or neither
Because the two switches are separate, you pick exactly which measurements the plan shows: - Both on (the default): the overall outside lengths plus every room's inside sizes. - Exterior only: just the size of the whole home. Handy for a quick footprint check. - Interior only: just the room-by-room sizes, without the outside lengths. Use this when you're furnishing and only care about the space inside each room. - Both off: a clean drawing with no wall measurements, for arranging furniture. If you had Split at wall intersections turned off before this change, your plan now shows exterior only, the same as before; if you had dimension lines off, both switches are off. Nothing on your plan changed.
One plan, four choices: both, exterior only, interior only, none. - 8
Show room labels
Room names. Each room you've closed off with walls gets a label, and so does any label you add yourself. By default a label sits as a small tag showing the first letter of the name; tap it to see the full name and size, rename the room, or auto-furnish it. Add label under this row drops a new label you can type into and drag anywhere. It's handy for an open-plan area with no walls of its own. Prints? Room names print when Labels is ticked in the export dialog.
On: a tag in each room. Tap a tag to open it. - 9
Keep labels expanded
Shows every room label fully open, with the name, size, and area, instead of the small tag. It's useful when you want to read the whole plan at a glance or take a screenshot.
Collapsed tags vs. labels kept open: Bedroom 1, 127″ × 151″, 133 sq ft. - 10
Show room dimensions and area
Only used while Keep labels expanded is on. Untick it to show just the room names, without the size and square footage under them.
Off: names only. On: size and area under each name. - 11
Show furniture labels
Writes each piece's name on it: Queen Bed, Nightstand, 6-Drawer Dresser. It starts off because a fully labelled plan gets busy. The piece you've selected always shows its own name. Prints? Exports use one Labels box, which covers furniture names and sizes, room names, and your own labels together. It starts ticked whenever room labels, furniture labels or furniture dimensions show on screen, but furniture names print only if this switch is on when you open the export dialog. Hide them here and a PDF with Labels ticked shows room names without furniture names.
On: every piece is named on the plan. - 12
Show furniture dimensions
Writes each piece's width × depth on it (60″ × 80″ for a queen bed). This is the quickest way to check sizes across a whole room. It also starts off. Selecting a piece doesn't add its size to the plan; the inspector shows its width and depth instead. Prints? Only when this switch is on and Labels is ticked in the export dialog. With names on and sizes off, each piece prints just its name, centred.
On: width × depth on every piece. - 13
Show outlets, switches & symbols
Shows or hides your outlets, switches, lights and other plan symbols, the circuit lines between them, and the names you've given them (for example Breaker 12). Off, they all disappear from the plan and can't be tapped, which gives you a clean plan for arranging furniture. On, every device shows, and a device you've renamed shows its name beside it; one still called by its standard name (Outlet) stays unlabelled. Show furniture labels no longer brings device names back on its own. It starts off on a new device. It switches on by itself when you place an outlet, switch or symbol, and when you open a plan that has them, unless you hid it yourself. It used to be called Show outlet, switch & symbol names and only hid the names. See electrical plans. Prints? Yes, always. Hiding them here doesn't take them off exports, prints or the 3D view. Their names print when Labels is ticked in the export dialog.
On (left): the outlet and the switch show. Off (right): they're hidden, not deleted. - 14
Show alignment guides
Dashed lines through the middle of the plan, with a marker at the centre and at each wall's midpoint. While you drag a piece, pink lines also show when it lines up with something else. This switch only controls whether you see the guides. Snapping is the separate magnet button in the toolbar. See alignment guides and snap. Prints? Not from this switch. The export dialog has its own Center / wall midpoint guides option, which is off by default.
On: centre lines and the orange centre marker. - 15
Show vaulted ceilings
The dashed outline of each vaulted ceiling, with its ridge line and slope arrows. The ceiling sits above the room, so its outline covers the furniture underneath. Turn this off when you want to tap or move furniture in that room, and back on to edit the vault. The 3D view always shows the real ceiling. It starts off on a new device and switches on when you draw a vault or open a plan that has one (unless you hid it yourself). See vaulted and cathedral ceilings. Prints? Yes. Vaulted ceilings always appear on exported and printed plans, whatever this switch says.
On: the vault's outline and ridge line over Bedroom 2. - 16
Show flooring
The wood, tile, and carpet patterns you've given each room in Materials → Surfaces → Flooring Material. Off gives a plain drawing. Your flooring choices are kept, and 3D always shows them. It starts off on a new device and switches on when you give a room a floor or open a plan that has flooring. See per-room flooring. Prints? Only when you tick Flooring in the export dialog. It starts unticked, so a plain export shows each room's soft colour tint (Room tints) instead. With Flooring ticked, each floored room prints its wood, tile or carpet in place of the tint. The box only appears when at least one room's flooring would actually print, and it's greyed out with Black & white or Electrical plan. See exporting a plan image.
On: Bedroom 1's hardwood shows on the plan. - 17
Show tile layouts
Draws every layout you saved in the Tile Planner over its room: full tiles, cut tiles and grout lines, in the tile's finish when you picked one. It sits on top of the flooring and under walls and furniture, and it turns with a rotated plan. The row is only listed when the floor you're on has a saved layout, and it starts off: saving a layout doesn't switch it on, so a plan you already have looks the same until you tick it. Prints? The export dialog has a Tile layouts box (only when a floor has a saved layout). It starts ticked when this switch is on. In black & white the tiles print white with grey cuts; on the electrical plan the box is greyed out.
Show tile layouts draws the saved layout on the plan, under the tub, toilet and vanity. - 18
Show sticky notes
Your sticky notes on the plan. Tap one to read or edit it. It starts off on a new device and switches on when you add a note or open a plan that has notes. See labels and sticky notes. Prints? The export dialog's Sticky notes option puts a numbered pin where each note sits and lists the full text on a Notes page. It starts ticked when this switch is on and unticked when it's off, every time you open the dialog; you can still change it there for one export. See What prints below.
On: the note sits where you put it. - 19
Show tape measurements
Lengths and areas you measured with the tape measure and kept with the pin. They stay on the plan and are saved with your design. It starts off on a new device; keeping a measurement switches it on, and so does opening a plan that has kept measurements, so a new one never seems to vanish. See the tape measure. Prints? Through the export dialog's Tape measurements option, which starts ticked only when this switch is on.
On: the 55″ you measured between island and counter. - 20
Show corner angles
Marks the angle at every corner of your plan's outline, measured where the inside faces of the two walls meet (where you'd hold a square or a protractor). A square corner (90°) gets the draughting right-angle symbol, a small green square tucked into the corner, with 90° beside it. Every other angle gets a blue arc and its number, so a corner that's 89.5° or 91° stands out at a glance. An inside corner, like the inner corner of an L-shaped plan, reads 270°. Points where a wall just carries straight on (for example after you split a wall) show nothing, and round rooms show no angles. If two corners are very close together, zoom in to see their angles. It's off until you turn it on. Use it to check a traced or hand-drawn plan: every corner that should be square should show the green right-angle symbol. To square up a corner that isn't, open Plan Settings → Layout → Outline Editor, tap the corner and choose Make 90°, or tap All 90° to square every corner at once (Undo puts it back). Prints? No. Corner angles are only drawn on screen, never in exported or printed plans.
Every corner of this plan is square, so each one gets the green right-angle symbol (zoomed in, top left). - 21
Show other floors (multi-floor homes)
Only appears when your design has more than one floor. It draws the walls and stairs of the floors above and below faintly on the floor you're editing, so you can line up stairs and walls between levels. It's off until you turn it on. See multi-floor designs. Prints? No. Each floor exports on its own.
On: the ground floor's walls (thin grey lines) and its staircase show under the floor above. - 22
Show original plan (traced photo)
Only appears on a floor you traced from a photo or a PDF. It lays the original picture faintly under your drawing so you can check every wall against it. It's off by default. While it's on, a button next to the 3D view hides your drawing for a moment so you can see the original on its own. See tracing a floor plan. Prints? No. The original picture never goes into exports or prints.
- 23
What prints: Layers vs. the export options
Layers decide what you see while you work. Export / Print / Share → PNG/PDF or Print has its own boxes for the file, and the measurement and label boxes start from your Layers switches each time you open it: - Labels: room names (with size and area), your own labels, and furniture names and sizes. Ticked when Show room labels, Show furniture labels or Show furniture dimensions is on. Furniture names print only if Show furniture labels is on, and furniture sizes only if Show furniture dimensions is on; there's no separate box for them. - Exterior dimensions: each outside wall's overall length. Ticked when Show exterior dimensions is on. - Interior dimensions: each wall's measurement split where other walls meet it, so every room's inside size prints. Ticked unless both dimension rows are off in Layers. The two are independent, so you can export interior only, exterior only, both, or neither. - Inside the rooms: indented under Interior dimensions. Ticked, an outside wall's room measurements print on the room side of the wall; unticked, in the margin. Follows Layers → Inside the rooms, and greyed out unless Interior dimensions is ticked. - Tape measurements: your kept lengths and areas. Ticked when Show tape measurements is on. - Sticky notes: numbered pins plus the Notes page. Only listed when your plan has at least one note with text. Ticked when Show sticky notes is on. - Tile layouts: the layouts saved in the Tile Planner. Only listed when a floor has one. Ticked when Show tile layouts is on. - Flooring: the floors you picked for each room. Unticked to start, and only listed when a room's flooring would print. - Room tints, Grid, Center / wall midpoint guides: their own choices. - Vaulted ceilings, outlets, switches and plan symbols always print. The traced photo, corner angles and other floors never do. So what you hid on screen stays off the export unless you tick it again in the dialog. Glance at the boxes before you export.
A real export with room names, furniture names, measurements, a kept tape measurement and sticky-note pins. - 24
Reset to defaults
The last row puts every switch back to how it started: exterior and interior dimensions, Inside the rooms, and room labels (as small tags) on; furniture labels, furniture sizes, outlets, switches & symbols, guides, vaulted ceilings, flooring, tile layouts, sticky notes, tape measurements, corner angles, other floors and the traced photo off. Computers and phones start the same. The layers that go off come back on by themselves the next time you add such an item.
Tips
Clean plan for arranging, full plan for sharing
Hide furniture labels and sizes while you move things around. Turn them on, or tick Labels in the export dialog, when you send the plan to someone.
Faster on a big plan
On a large design or an older laptop, switching off Show flooring, furniture labels, and furniture dimensions gives the canvas less to draw. See browser support and performance.
Can't tap the bed under a vaulted ceiling?
The vault's outline is on top of it. Switch off Show vaulted ceilings, move the furniture, then switch it back on.
Common confusions
Thinking a hidden layer is deleted
Layers only hide things. Your notes, labels, kept measurements, and vaults are all still in the design. Tick the row again to see them.
Forgetting the export dialog can differ from the screen
The export dialog starts from your Layers every time you open it, but you can change any box there for one export. If something you hid shows up in a file, you ticked it in the dialog; if something is missing, tick it there or in Layers.
Setting it on one device and expecting it on another
Layer choices are remembered per device and browser, not saved in the design. Your phone keeps its own settings, and someone you share the design with sees their own.
Frequently asked questions
Where did my room labels go?
Open Layers and tick Show room labels. If you see only small letter tags, tap a tag or tick Keep labels expanded to show the full names.
Where did my measurements go?
Wall measurements come back with Layers → Show exterior dimensions (the overall outside lengths) and Show interior dimensions (the room-by-room sizes). The old Show dimension lines and Split at wall intersections rows were replaced by these two in October 2026. A distance you measured with the tape measure and kept comes back with Show tape measurements. If you closed the tape without tapping the pin, the measurement wasn't kept. Measure it again and tap Keep this measurement.
How do I show furniture names or sizes on the plan?
Tick Show furniture labels for names and Show furniture dimensions for width × depth. Both start off. The piece you've selected always shows its name; its width and depth are in the inspector, not on the plan.
Why are some wall measurements missing?
They show only when they fit. When the plan is zoomed out or crowded, a number that has no room is hidden until you zoom in, and numbers inside rooms move off furniture. Select a wall to see all of its numbers. If every measurement is gone, tick Layers → Show exterior dimensions and Show interior dimensions. Exports don't hide numbers this way: with Exterior dimensions and Interior dimensions ticked in the export dialog, every wall measurement prints.
How do I hide the outside measurements but keep the room sizes?
Untick Layers → Show exterior dimensions and leave Show interior dimensions ticked. The overall outside lengths disappear and each room's inside widths and depths stay. The export dialog then opens with Exterior dimensions unticked too, so exports and printouts match.
Where did Show dimension lines and Split at wall intersections go?
They became Show exterior dimensions and Show interior dimensions, two separate switches. Split at wall intersections only worked while dimension lines were on; now either one can be on by itself. Your old choice carried over, so your plan looks the same as before.
My sticky notes disappeared. Are they deleted?
Probably not. Check Layers → Show sticky notes. It starts off on a new device (it switches on when you add a note), so on a new phone or computer you may need to tick it once. Hiding notes doesn't delete them. While they're hidden, the export dialog's Sticky notes box starts unticked, so they don't print unless you tick it.
My outlets and switches disappeared. Where did they go?
Tick Layers → Show outlets, switches & symbols. With it off, outlets, switches, lights, other plan symbols and circuit lines are hidden from the plan and can't be tapped. They're still in your design, in the 3D view and on every export. It starts off on a new device and switches on when you place a device or open a plan that has them.
Why are some room measurements inside the rooms now?
That's Layers → Inside the rooms, under Show interior dimensions. It draws an outside wall's room measurements on the room side of the wall, sliding each number to a clear stretch past any furniture; only a wall where a number has no clear spot at all keeps them in the margin. Untick it to put them all back in the margin. The export dialog's Inside the rooms box starts the same way.
Do my Layers choices save with the design?
No. They're remembered on the device and browser you set them on, for every design you open there. A phone and a computer each keep their own, and people you share a design with use their own settings.
How do I check that the corners of my plan are square?
Turn on Layers → Show corner angles. Every outline corner shows its angle; a square (90°) corner gets the green right-angle symbol and any other angle a blue arc. An inside corner of an L or U shape reads 270°. To fix one that isn't square, use Make 90° or All 90° in Plan Settings → Layout → Outline Editor.
Why don't I see "Show other floors" or "Show original plan"?
Those rows only appear when they apply. Show other floors appears when the design has more than one floor, and Show original plan (traced photo) appears on a floor you traced from a photo or PDF.
How do I export without furniture names?
Turn off Layers → Show furniture labels (and Show furniture dimensions for the sizes), then open the export dialog. With Labels ticked, room names still print, but furniture names and sizes follow Layers. Since late October 2026 hidden furniture names no longer print. See exporting a plan image.
How do I print my tile layout?
Tick Layers → Show tile layouts (the row appears once a layout is saved in the Tile Planner), then Export / Print / Share → PNG/PDF or Print: the Tile layouts box starts ticked. See Tile Planner.
