Wall-mounted air conditioning — mini-splits and PTAC units

Model the AC you'll actually install: high-wall mini-split heads, low floor consoles, or through-wall PTAC units.

Ductless air conditioning claims wall space you should plan around — a mini-split head high on the wall, a PTAC unit through the wall under a window, or a floor console down low. RoomSketch3D has the real units, each at its true mounting height, so your art, shelving, and furniture don't clash with them.

This page covers finding the units in the catalog, mounting each type on the right wall, and checking the heights in 3D.

Step by step

  1. 1

Find the unit in the catalog

Search the catalog for mini-split or PTAC, pick the type, then tap the wall where it mounts.

The unit sits on the wall like any fixture — drag it along the wall to reposition.
  2. 2

Pick the spot with airflow in mind

Mini-split heads want a clear throw across the room — avoid blowing straight onto the bed or sofa. PTACs need clear floor space in front, usually under a window.

  3. 3

Check heights in 3D and elevations

Each type renders at its true mounting height — heads high on the wall, consoles and PTACs low — so 3D views and elevations show the room as it will really look.

The head mounts high on the wall, exactly where the installer would put it.

Tips

Mini-split heads go high

A wall-mounted mini-split head sits near the ceiling, usually 6–7 ft up, with clearance above and to the sides. Plan tall shelving and art around that band.

PTAC under the window

A hotel-style PTAC goes through the wall down low, typically under a window. Leave the floor in front clear for airflow.

Common mistakes

Hanging art where the head goes

The mini-split head needs open wall above the furniture. Place it first, then lay out art and shelves around it.

Blocking the console

A floor console pushes air from the floor upward — don't park a sofa against it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the AC units?

Search the catalog for 'mini-split', 'PTAC', or 'AC'. The wall head, the through-wall PTAC, and the floor console all come up.

At what height does the mini-split mount?

High on the wall near the ceiling. It renders at that true mounting height in 3D, so you can plan around it.

What's a PTAC?

A packaged through-the-wall unit — the hotel-room style. It mounts low, usually under a window, and vents outside through the wall.

Do the units show in 3D at the right height?

Yes — every unit sits at its real mounting height in 3D, so there are no surprises on install day.
