Edit your walls right on the plan
Tap any wall on the plan to move it, type its length, split it, delete it or make it a railing. Moving an outside wall stretches the walls beside it, so the outline stays closed (turn its link off to move it alone); a deleted outside wall leaves a dashed gap with a + to put it back. Draw new outside walls with Build → Exterior Wall, and keep the Outline Editor for the rare corner fix.
Your walls are edited where you see them: on the plan. Tap a wall and everything you can do to it appears in a small bar beside it and in its settings panel. You can drag it, type its exact length, split it in two, delete it, or turn it into a railing or an open side. The rest of the plan updates as you go, so you can watch the rooms change size. Nothing opens in a separate screen and there's no Update button to remember.
Looking for Edit Floor Plan Shape (or the Edit Floor pill on a phone)? It's gone. Everything it did for walls now happens on the plan, as this page shows. New exterior walls are drawn on the plan too, with Build → Exterior Wall (see Add exterior walls right on your plan). The one-off outline fixes, like dragging a single corner, squaring every corner or re-scaling, live in the Outline Editor under Plan Settings → Layout: see The Outline Editor.
What you'll need
- •A design open in the editor, on a computer, tablet or phone
Step by step
- 1
Tap a wall to select it (outer or interior)
Tap the wall. An outer wall turns blue and gets a small bar beside it: its length (tap to type), a padlock, a link button, scissors and a red trash can. The link starts blue (on). A crosshair sits at each end of the wall and a + just beyond each end. Its settings panel, titled Exterior wall, opens at the bottom (along the bottom of the screen on a phone) with Type: Wall | Railing | Open, Length, Height, Thickness, the Is Load-bearing? switch and Remove. An interior wall gets a bar with its length, a padlock, a link, a magnet and a ⋯ button, and opens the Interior Wall panel (Length, Thickness, Style, Height). Tap an empty spot, or press Esc, to deselect.
Tap an outer wall: length, padlock, link (blue: on), scissors and trash beside it; a + at each end. - 2
Drag the wall to move it (with its neighbours, or on its own)
With the wall selected, drag it in or out, or drag the crosshair at either end to make it longer or shorter along its line. Doors and windows ride along and the measurements update live. By default the link button on its bar is solid blue, Joined walls move too: the walls beside it stretch to stay joined and the interior walls attached to it come along, so no gap opens in the outline. Tap the link so it turns grey and broken, Wall moves on its own, when you want only that wall to change: the walls at its two ends then stay where they are and any space that opens between them stays as a dashed gap in the outline (tap a gap's + to fill it with a wall). On a computer, hold Alt (Option on a Mac) while you drag to do the opposite for that one drag. Outer walls follow the toolbar's snapping button: on, the wall lines up with parallel walls as it comes close; off, it goes exactly where you drag it. More on gaps and the link: Gaps in an outside wall.
Link on (the start): the walls beside it stretch, no gap opens. - 3
Type an exact length
Got a tape-measure number? Tap the length on the bar beside the selected wall (or the Length field in its settings panel) and type it. Feet and inches, inches, or metres and centimetres all work. While you type, a pin marks the end that stays put and an arrow marks the end that moves; tap the arrow to keep the other end instead. With the link on (the start), the wall at the moving end comes with it; turn the link off and a shorter length leaves a dashed gap between the moved end and the corner it used to reach instead. Full details: Set an exact wall length.
- 4
Split a wall in two
Select the wall and tap the scissors on its bar (for an interior wall, tap ⋯ first). A blue note at the top of the screen says Drag the pin along the wall, then tap the scissors to split. A pin appears on the wall: drag its round head along the wall. The tip marks the exact spot, so your finger never covers it. Dots mark where other walls meet this one; tap a dot to jump there. On an outside wall you can split right through a door or window: it then spans both halves, and the plan, exports and 3D cut it out of both pieces. Only a stretch under a balcony or bay window can't be split; it shows in red. Away from a dot you see the distance from each end of the wall; tap a distance to type it. When the pin is where you want it, tap the scissors on the wall to split, or tap the small × beside the pin to cancel. Both halves keep the wall's height, thickness, paint and name, and doors and windows stay exactly where they were. Each half is now its own wall: give it its own height or thickness, drag one out to make a bump-out, or delete it to open that stretch. A door, window or opening can sit across the joint between two pieces of a straight run, so you can still tap, drag or widen one over the split; each piece keeps its own height and thickness above and beside it.
Drag the pin, even onto a window, tap a distance to type it, then tap the scissors. - 5
On a phone, it works the same way
On a phone, tap the wall and its bar appears beside it, with its settings along the bottom of the screen. Tap the scissors and the blue note runs across the top: Drag the pin or tap a dot, then tap the scissors to split. The pin's round head sits off to the side of the wall, so your finger never covers the spot you're splitting at. Pinch to zoom in when you want a finer position, or tap a distance and type it.
Phone: the pin's head stays clear of your finger. - 6
Interior walls: the ⋯ button hides split, copy and delete
Tap an interior wall and its bar shows its length (tap to type), a padlock, a link, a red magnet that switches snapping on or off for that wall, and ⋯ (More: split, copy or delete this wall). Tap ⋯ and three round buttons appear beside the wall: scissors (split, exactly as above), copy and delete. They tuck away again when you select another wall. Drag the crosshair at either end to change its length, or pull the blue + to add a wall connected to it. More in Interior walls and partitions.
Interior wall: tap ⋯ for scissors, copy and delete. - 7
Delete a wall: it leaves a gap you can fill again
Tap the trash can on an outer wall's bar (or Remove at the bottom of its panel). The wall is taken out and that side is left open, for an open-plan side, a porch edge or a carport. Its place stays in the outline as a dashed gap, still selected, with a + in its middle: tap the + (Fill this gap with a wall) to put the wall back. The room's outline, floor and furniture stay where they are, and at least one solid outer wall always remains. An interior wall is deleted from its ⋯ menu instead. Undo brings back either kind. Walls you removed before October 25, 2026 still show a Restore button in their panel.
A deleted wall leaves a dashed gap; tap its + to put the wall back. - 8
Make a wall a railing, or an open side (Wall | Railing | Open)
In an outer wall's panel, set Type to Railing and pick a Style: Spindle, Pony Wall, Glass, Horizontal Slat, Cable, Wrought Iron or Picket. Use it for a loft edge, a landing over a living room or a half wall by the stairs. Open leaves a gap with no wall at all, like deleting it; tap Wall (or the gap's +) to make it a solid wall again. Interior walls have their own Style choices in their panel: Full, Pony, Glass, Railing or Partition. On a yard floor the outline is a fence, so you get fence styles instead. See Railing styles.
Type: Wall | Railing | Open, then pick a railing style. - 9
Grow the plan: Add Room, or draw new exterior walls
For a rectangular addition, open Build (on a phone, Structural & Interior) and tap Add Room, the first tile under Structural: tap the outside wall the new room sits against, drag its corners to size it, then tap Done (see Add a room). For an extension of any shape, tap Exterior Wall, the tile next to it, or pull the + at the end of a selected outside wall: tap where the new walls leave the plan, pull the + for each wall or type its length, and end back on an outside wall. The plan grows and the stretch of old wall now inside becomes an interior wall. See Add exterior walls right on your plan. Doors, windows and fixtures you've already placed never move.
- 10
Lock a length so nothing changes it
Tap the padlock on the wall's bar (or next to Length in its panel) to lock that wall's length. Edits that would change it, like resizing a neighbouring wall with the link on, are stopped with a message: That would change a locked wall length. To change it, select the wall and tap the padlock next to Length. Each piece of a split-up measurement has its own padlock too: tap the number, then the padlock (on a computer, hover over the number and click it). A locked wall can't be split until you unlock it.
- 11
Check corners and work on a rotated plan
Turn on Layers → Show corner angles to see the angle at every corner, with square corners in green. It's the quickest way to spot a corner that's slightly off. Everything on this page also works with the plan rotated (Plan Settings → Rotation): the split pin, distances, crosshairs and + handles follow the wall, and their text stays upright. See the Layers menu and Rotate or flip the plan.
Tips
Type when you have a number, drag when you don't
Dragging is for sizing by eye. If you measured the wall, type the length, and lock it if it must not change.
Split where a real wall meets it
The dots on a wall you're splitting mark where interior walls meet it. Splitting there gives you the outer wall pieces that match your rooms, ready to move or delete one by one.
Turn the link off to reshape just one wall
The link starts on, so the walls at both ends come along when you move an outside wall. To move only that wall, tap the link so it reads Wall moves on its own (grey, broken), or hold Alt (Option on a Mac) while you drag. Dashed gaps then open at its ends. The setting holds for every outside wall until you change it back or reopen the design.
Undo is always there
Every move, split, deletion and railing change can be undone with Undo (Ctrl+Z on a computer).
Common mistakes
Looking for Edit Floor Plan Shape
That button and the phone's Edit Floor pill were removed. Tap the wall on the plan instead. For a one-off corner fix, use Plan Settings → Layout → Outline Editor.
Deleting a wall to make the room smaller
Deleting leaves a gap; it doesn't shrink the floor. To make a room smaller, drag the wall in or type a shorter length; with the link on (how it starts) the walls beside it follow.
Dragging a wall and finding dashed lines
Those are gaps: the link was off (or you held Alt / Option), so the wall moved on its own and the walls beside it stayed. Undo, tap the link so it's blue again, and drag; or keep the move and tap each gap's + if you want walls there.
Splitting under a bay or right at a corner
The note at the top says why a spot can't be split: Not under a balcony or bay, Too close to the corner, Unlock this wall's measurements first or A curved wall can't be split. Slide the pin a little, or unlock the length. A door or window no longer stops a split.
Frequently asked questions
Where did Edit Floor Plan Shape go?
It was retired in October 2026, on the web, iPhone, iPad and Android. Everything it did for walls is now done by tapping the wall on the plan: move, type a length, split (the scissors), delete (the trash can; it leaves a gap with a + to put the wall back), and Wall | Railing | Open. Use Add Room or Exterior Wall in the Build panel to grow the plan. The editor itself, now called the Outline Editor, still opens from Plan Settings → Layout → Outline Editor for one-off fixes: dragging or deleting a corner, All 90°, Re-scale, and Reposition this floor on an upper floor.
How do I drag a corner?
Select an outside wall and drag the crosshair at its end: the wall gets longer or shorter along its own line, and the wall at that corner comes along (turn the link off to leave it where it is). For a free corner drag (to make an angled wall, say), open Plan Settings → Layout → Outline Editor, drag the corner, and tap Update Floor Plan.
Why does only one wall move when I drag it?
Because its link button is off (grey, Wall moves on its own), or you held Alt / Option during the drag. The link starts on each time you open a design, but once you turn it off it stays off for every outside wall. Tap it so it turns solid blue (Joined walls move too) and the walls beside it stretch with it. Any dashed gaps the first drag left can be filled with their +.
How do I add a wall to the outline, like a bump-out or an extension?
For a rectangular addition, use Build → Add Room and tap the outside wall it sits against. For a small bump-out, split the wall twice and drag the middle piece out. For an extension of any other shape, use Build → Exterior Wall (or pull the + at the end of a selected outside wall): tap where it starts on an outside wall, pull the + for each new wall or type its length, and end back on the plan. The stretch of old outside wall that ends up inside becomes an interior wall. See Add exterior walls right on your plan.
I deleted a wall. How do I get it back?
Undo, or select the dashed gap where the wall was and tap its + (Fill this gap with a wall). Walls removed before October 25, 2026 keep a Restore button in their panel instead.
How do I remove a whole room I added by mistake?
Right after adding it, Undo. Later, use Remove area: select each of the room's outside walls and tap its trash can (each becomes a dashed gap), select one of the gaps and tap Remove area on its bar, check the red preview and tap Delete (or Delete all if furniture stands in it). The room's floor comes off, the wall it shared with the house becomes an outside wall again at the outline's thickness, and the windows and doors on the rest of that house wall stay. See Gaps in an outside wall.
Does editing walls move my furniture?
No. Furniture stays where it is. If a piece ends up in a wall or outside the room, Smart Flow Check points it out so you can move it.
Can I still edit the yard boundary this way?
The yard is edited in its own editor, which keeps its full toolset: Split Boundary, Add Boundary, Remove Boundary, Boundary Style and Edit Boundary Length/Height (each fence's length and height). Open it with Edit Yard in the Floors menu, from any floor.
Does this work on a phone?
Yes. Everything on this page works the same on a phone. The wall's bar sits beside it, its settings open as a panel at the bottom of the screen, and the split pin is sized for a finger, with its tip off to the side so you can see the exact spot.
