Adding balconies

Two balcony types: rectangular (one wall) and L-shaped (two walls at a corner). Place in two clicks.

A balcony extends a room out past the exterior wall — a rectangular one off a single wall, or an L-shape that wraps a building corner for a larger deck. RoomSketch3D draws the railing for you and shows the whole thing in 3D, so you can judge the view and how much usable depth you really have.

Both shapes drop in with two clicks. This page covers placing each, setting the length and projection, and what a balcony does and doesn't add to your plan.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Pick the type

Build Panel → Balcony section. Balcony for rectangular; L-shaped Balcony for corner balconies.

A rectangular balcony projects from a single wall.
  2. 2

    Click the wall (or corner)

Rectangular: Click the wall it projects from. L-shaped: Click the corner where the L starts.

  3. 3

    Set dimensions

Inspector → Length (along the wall) and Projection (outward). Railings render automatically; choose a railing style in the Inspector if desired.

An L-shaped balcony wraps a corner — click the corner to place it.

Tips

Make the depth usable

A projection under about 3 ft is really a Juliet balcony — enough to open a door onto, not to stand on. For a bistro table and two chairs, aim for 4–6 ft of projection.

Wrap the sunny corner

Use the L-shape at the corner that catches morning or evening sun, so the longer leg faces the light.

Common mistakes

Projecting into a setback

On a real lot the balcony has to clear the property line and any required setback. Draw the lot first, then size the balcony to fit inside it.

Forgetting the door onto it

A balcony needs a door or sliding door leading out. Add the opening in the same wall so the approach stays clear.

Frequently asked questions

How do I change a balcony's size after placing it?

Select it and edit Length (along the wall) and Projection (outward) in the Inspector. The railing re-draws to match.

Does a balcony count toward my floor area?

It's reported separately as balcony/patio area, not folded into the interior usable area — the same way a real plan lists it apart from conditioned space.

Can I change the railing style?

Yes. The railing renders automatically, and you can choose a style in the Inspector while the balcony is selected.

What's the difference between the rectangular and L-shaped balcony?

Rectangular projects from one wall; the L-shape wraps two walls at a corner. Place the L by clicking the corner where the walls meet.

Can I put furniture on the balcony?

Yes — add outdoor pieces from the catalog and drop them onto the balcony footprint, just like any floor area.
