Adding an elevator that travels between floors

Drop an elevator into a multi-floor design, set the floors it serves, and it appears on every level it reaches.

Some plans need an elevator — a multi-story home, an accessible design, a duplex. RoomSketch3D drops a real shaft through the building: pick the cab size, place it on one floor, and set the range of floors it serves. The shaft then appears in the right spot on every level.

This page covers adding the elevator, choosing its size and floors, and seeing it in 3D and in your exports.

What you'll need

  • •A design with at least two floors (an elevator can be placed on one floor, but shines with several)

Step by step

  1. 1

    Pick the elevator tool

Build Panel → Elevator. Choose a cab size when prompted — small, medium, and large residential cabs, or a custom footprint.

Pick a cab size — or set a custom footprint.
  2. 2

    Place it on the plan

Click where the shaft goes. Put it where it can occupy the same footprint on every floor it serves — beside the staircase is classic.

The shaft on the plan — drag to reposition like any item.
  3. 3

    Set the floors it serves

In the elevator's inspector, choose the bottom and top floors of its range. The shaft automatically appears on every floor in between.

  4. 4

    Check it in 3D

In a multi-floor design, switch to 3D to see the shaft rising through the building. It's included in your image, PDF, and 3D exports.

Tips

Beside the stair is the classic spot

An elevator usually sits next to the staircase, sharing the vertical core. Place it there and it reads naturally on every floor.

Custom cab for a home lift

A residential lift is smaller than a commercial cab. Pick Custom and set the footprint to your real unit so the surrounding walls fit.

Common mistakes

Placing it on only one floor

The elevator serves a range of floors — set the bottom and top in the Inspector. If it only shows on one level, the range isn't set.

Forgetting the door side

Leave clear floor in front of the cab door on every floor it serves, so people can actually get in and out.

Frequently asked questions

How do I choose which floors the elevator serves?

Select it and set the bottom and top floors in the Inspector. The shaft then appears on every level in that range.

What cab sizes are there?

Small, medium, large, or custom. Pick the size that matches your real cab; use custom for a home lift.

Does the elevator show in exports?

Yes — the shaft is in the image, PDF, and 3D-model exports, on every floor it serves.

Where should I put the elevator?

Beside the staircase is the usual spot, sharing the core. Place it on one floor and it stacks through the building.
