Auto-design — suggested layouts you can pick from and edit

Trace a box over any room, tell RoomSketch3D what it is, and get a few ready-made furniture layouts to pick from — then keep arranging everything by hand.

A blank room is the hardest part of any design. Auto-design does the first pass for you: you trace the area you want furnished, say what kind of room it is, and RoomSketch3D suggests a few complete furniture layouts you can flip between. Kitchens are fully wired up today, with living rooms, bedrooms, and bathrooms alongside them.

Nothing it makes is locked. Every suggested layout is ordinary furniture dropped into your plan, so you keep the one you like and then move, swap, resize, and rearrange exactly as you would with anything you placed by hand.

What you'll need

  • A floor plan with at least one room
  • A couple of minutes

Step by step

  1. 1

Open Auto-design from the Furnish panel

Open the furniture browser and pick a room type — Kitchen, Living Room, Bedroom, or Bathroom. A shortcut card appears under the search box: Auto-design this room — “Explore layout suggestions you can pick from and edit.” Tap it to launch the designer. (You can also start it any time from the Auto-design wand in the toolbar.)

  2. 2

Trace the area you want to furnish

The tool opens as Auto-design an area. Following the hint — “Drag a box over the room you want to furnish, tracing its walls as closely as you can” — drag a rectangle across the room. The closer your box hugs the real walls, the better the suggested layout fits.

  3. 3

Choose the room type, layout shape, and what to include

Now set the details. Room type confirms what the space is; Layout shape picks the arrangement — for a kitchen that's Single wall, Galley, L-shape, or U-shape; and What to include is a row of toggle chips (Base cabinets, Wall cabinets, Sink, Range / stove, Refrigerator, Dishwasher, and more) so the layout carries only the pieces you want. Fine-tune the box itself here too: “Drag to move, use the handle to rotate, and drag the corners to resize.” Tap Redraw to start the box over.

    Generate a few layouts

Tap Generate. RoomSketch3D lays out the room several ways and shows them as Variation 1, Variation 2, and so on — tap between them to see each arrangement drop into your plan live. “Pick the variation closest to your vision, then keep editing to arrange everything exactly how you want.”

Flip between variations — each one drops into your plan as you tap it.
  5. 5

    See any variation in 3D

Not sure from the flat plan? Tap View in 3D to walk into the room and judge the layout at eye level. Come back and keep flipping variations — Back returns you to the controls if you want to change the shape or what's included.

  6. 6

Keep the one you like — then edit freely

When a variation feels right, tap Done to bake it into your design in a single, undoable step. From there it's just furniture: select any piece to move, rotate, swap, or delete it, and add anything the layout missed. Auto-design gets you off the blank canvas — the finishing touches are all yours.

Done drops the layout into your plan as ordinary, fully-editable furniture.

Tips

Trace tight to the walls

The suggested layout is sized to the box you draw, so the closer your rectangle follows the real walls, the better cabinets and furniture line up. Use the corner handles to nudge the fit before you generate.

Trim the layout with the chips

Turn off anything you don't want under What to include before generating — no dishwasher, no range hood — and the variations come back without it, so there's less to delete afterward.

Generate, then make it yours

Treat the result as a starting point, not a finished room. Pick the closest variation, tap Done, and then move and swap pieces — auto-design saves the tedious first pass, not the personal touches.

Common mistakes

Drawing the box loosely

A box that overshoots the walls produces a layout that floats away from them. Trace as closely as you can, and use the resize corners to tighten it before Generate.

Expecting the layout to be locked

A generated variation isn't a special object — it's plain furniture. If a piece is wrong, just select and edit it. There's nothing to “unlock.”

Frequently asked questions

Which rooms can Auto-design lay out?

Kitchens, living rooms, bedrooms, and bathrooms — pick the room type in the Furnish panel, and the Auto-design shortcut appears for it. Each type offers its own layout shapes and its own set of includable pieces.

Can I edit the furniture it places?

Yes — completely. Once you tap Done, every item is ordinary furniture in your plan. Move it, rotate it, resize the room, swap pieces, or delete anything you don't want.

What if none of the variations fit?

Tap Back to return to the controls, then change the Layout shape or toggle pieces under What to include and generate again. You can also Redraw the box entirely for a different footprint.

Does generating a layout undo my other work?

No. Applying a variation adds furniture to the area you traced as a single, undoable step — the rest of your plan is untouched, and one undo removes it if you change your mind.
