Adding bay and corner bay windows

Bay windows project out from one wall; corner bays wrap two walls at a building corner. Here's how to place each.

A bay window pushes a run of glass out past the wall, adding a sunny alcove inside and a bump-out outside. A corner bay does the same across two walls that meet at a building corner, for a wider, wrap-around view. RoomSketch3D carves the alcove into the wall for you and renders the glass in 3D.

Both place in two clicks. This page covers choosing the type, setting the width and projection, and reading the result in 3D.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Pick the type

Build Panel → Windows section. Click Bay Window (one wall) or Corner Bay Window (two walls).

A bay window projects outward and carves an alcove into the wall.
  2. 2

    Click the wall (or corner)

Bay: Click the wall where the bay projects. Corner Bay: Click the corner where the bay wraps two walls.

  3. 3

    Set width and projection

Inspector → Width (length along the wall — typically 60–120 inches for bay). Projection (how far it pushes out — 16–36 inches).

A corner bay window wraps two walls — click the corner to place it.
  4. 4

    Verify in 3D

Switch to 3D. The bay renders with the alcove inside and the protrusion outside. Walk through it to confirm.

Tips

Standard sizes

A bay is usually 60–120 in wide and projects 16–36 in. Keep it in that range unless you're modelling a specific window — deeper than that and it starts to need its own little roof.

Add a window seat

The alcove a bay carves is the right depth for a window seat — drop a bench from the catalog into the recess.

Common mistakes

Placing a bay on an interior wall

A bay projects outside, so it belongs on an exterior wall — on an interior wall it has nowhere to bump out to.

Over-projecting

A projection past about 36 in reads as a bump-out room, not a window. Keep it in the 16–36 in range for a true bay.

Frequently asked questions

How wide should a bay window be?

Typically 60–120 in along the wall, projecting 16–36 in. Set both in the Inspector after placing it.

What's the difference between a bay and a corner bay?

A bay projects from one wall; a corner bay wraps two walls at a building corner. Place the corner bay by clicking the corner.

Do I have to cut the wall first?

No — placing a bay carves the alcove into the wall automatically. You don't remove wall separately.

Can I see it in 3D?

Yes. Switch to 3D and step into the alcove; the glass and the exterior bump-out render at their true size.
