Overview

A squat stand is a pair of independent or bridged uprights that hold the barbell for squats and presses without the bulk of a cage. It is the most space-efficient way to train the barbell at home.

Sizing & placement

At only 24 inches deep it is the shallowest rack here, with a 48-inch width and an 84-inch height that calls for a 7-foot ceiling. Keep the 36 inches of front clearance open so you can walk the bar out to squat.

Where it works

Compact garage gyms and home gyms; minimalist barbell setups.

Frequently asked questions

How deep is a squat stand?
Just 24 inches, making it the shallowest rack option for tight spaces.
Is it safe without safety bars?
It lacks a cage's spotter arms, so use it within your comfort range and keep the 36-inch front clearance to bail forward if needed.
